Acne is predominantly a disease of the oil glands. The oil gland openings get blocked due to Change in the quality and consistency of the oil produced by our own sebaceous glands. This leads to the formation of whiteheads and blackheads. It is these whiteheads and blackheads, which serve as a perfect medium for growth of acne causing germs. Once the infection sets in we see the classical red pimples pustules and nodes of acne. These are the ones, which are notorious in leaving those brown or red marks and sometimes even scars that last for a very long time.

WHY IS USING A CLEANSER AND CORRECT MOISTURISER IMPORTANT IN ACNE MANAGEMENT?
Post acne treatments with topical and oral medications can lead to tight and stretched skin. For such conditions, a number of formulations are available.
A daily ritual of cleansing the skin and removal of excess sebum is important so that the pores do not get blocked. A moisturizer is important so that the skin can maintain its natural skin barrier function and balance the pH of the skin. This barrier function is important so that we keep foreign particles at bay and the skin will remain supple and hydrated. It is essential that you use a non-comedogenic moisturizer as a cream too rich can clog the pores.
It is important that products target the various aspects of the cause of acne. We want to reduce the excessive oil production of the skin, exfoliate the skin and kill the bacteria that may be causing the inflammation.
Chemical exfoliants are preferred, as this is a much more gentle way of exfoliating the skin without causing physical trauma from beads and granules. Exfoliation lifts away the dead skin cells and prevents the pores from being blocked.
If you are on medication, it is essential that you check with a dermatologist before you use any type of exfoliants. Some of these can create severe irritation and dryness.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A MAKE UP IF I HAVE ACNE PRONE SKIN?
Choice of makeup should factor in the probable dryness that the anti-acne therapy will induce. So even if you have oily skin, some of your makeup may not spread evenly if the anti-acne medicines significantly reduce your skin oiliness.
You must choose makeup which is preferably either paraffin free or very low on it. Also look for makeup that claims it is non-comedogenic.
WHAT IS SOTRET, OR ISORET OR ISOTRETINOIN?
Isotretinoin was a wonder drug introduced in the 80’s for acne. It significantly reduces skin oiliness and has helped many acne patients, but this does not come without a significant load of side effects which need meticulous monitoring. We strongly recommend at MySkinCare not to abuse this medication on your own. This should always be taken in consultation with your dermatologist. Even though low doses are known to work very well, we must be very careful in using this medication as it has potent systemic side effects. It is known to cause depression and liver enzyme changes.
WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE ACNE SCARRING?
Managing inflammation of acne is important in reducing the chances of scarring. There are some ingredients which can be compounded to help you prevent acne scarring. In severe types of acne like nodular or nodulocystic acne, anti-inflammatory treatments orally may also be given.
